The 3 Most Durable Finishes for Homes with Kids and Pets
Does your home feel like a catch-all for backpacks, messy footwear, snacks, and pets? Having durable finishes for your floors, fabrics, and countertops to withstand all that comes at you is more obtainable today than you think!
I’m sharing my top 3 durable finishes for homes with kids and pets…
1. Opt for Durable Flooring
The toughest flooring products are always ceramic and stone as they can withstand years of daily wear and tear from dogs and kids. But, not everyone has that kind of budget or material preference. Today, many LVT (luxury vinyl tile) and LVP (luxury vinyl plank) products have been engineered to look like real hardwood and stone and can take daily abuse, and are also water-resistant.
Even better, you don't have to break the bank as many vinyl products are affordable compared to the real thing!
2. Performance Fabrics Withstand Wear and Tear
High-performance fabrics have to meet an abrasion requirement for durability and are rated by what the fabric industry calls the "double rub" test. This test simulates the back and forth abrasion on fabrics in a demanding environment. The higher the double rub rating, the better the material will perform. Look for 30,000 double rubs or higher along with stain resistance properties for areas where kids and dogs are present.
3. Functional and Low-Maintenance Counter Tops
It all boils down to how you function in the kitchen. If your family is known for placing hot pots and pans on the counter, then a natural granite stone is a beautiful and wise choice as it can withstand heat better than quartz. However, if your little ones are prone to frequent spills, granite is considered porous and susceptible to stains from acid and oil based foods.
If you prefer a surface that is stronger, non porous and is mostly bacteria-free, quartz makes sense! In addition, because quartz is a man made product, the pattern is easily duplicated and can be used multiple times throughout a single project where as the pattern in granite is completely random being a natural stone.
To sum it all up, many companies make it a point to manufacture durable, long-lasting products for todays busy families. Your designer knows where to find fabrics and finishes to accommodate your lifestyle and budget!
